DAVE WAS A PERSONABLE, SWEET, “UP” PERSON. WHENEVER WE CAME TO THE
HOUSE TO PAY CANASTA, HE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE AND A NICE WORD FOR EVERYONE.
A GREAT GENNTLEMAN. HE WILL BE MISSED.

When Dave arrived on our doorstep in Regina, Canada in the late 1940s, he was on a special mission. In addition to my parents and young brother Allan, and my scrawny pre-teenage self, two teenage girls lived in the house: Esther and her sister Betty, Holocaust survivors from the Lublin region of Poland.
Their mother’s sister, their Aunt Pearl, lived in Chicago, over 1,800 kilometres distant; and Pearl sent Dave to establish contact with them. Contact was established; and how! Dave made the long trip more times, with a special mission of his own: to woo Esther, who became his wife of 70 years, and is now his widow.
Dave came with love in his heart. Esther was its focus. But his love also encompassed all of the family, and it continued to do so for those next 70 years, extending to our children and grandchildren. Dave quickly became our friend, and I saw him as very special friend, and more –I loved him like an older brother: model, mentor, and buddy.
What I saw and experienced in and from Dave, my “Chicago Dave”, was trustworthiness, purpose, determination, steadiness and balance, and quiet courage. You could rely on his help and support whatever the circumstance. He was generous and kind and caring. He was always there for you. And in addition to that, he had a nice sense of humour; and he was savvy. He was an all-round golden lad, a mensch, a really, really good guy.
Now I cry for his passing, though it has brought him peace from his long illness.
I wish him peace and blessing.
I share the grief of his family. Theirs is a huge, irreparable loss.
I miss him sorely, and shall continue to do so.
